Welcome to the website Diversity in Language. We are a group of students of the English Studies capstone course at the University of Hong Kong.

This website provides an overview of a range of sociolinguistic topics falling under the theme of ‘Diversity in Language’. Diversity has arguably become a hot topic in modern sociolinguistics and the sociology of language. But how should we understand the notion of ‘linguistic diversity’? And how can it be measured and modelled?

There are many theoretical approaches to language and communication that could impact upon our view towards these questions. In this website, the six of us have adopted different frameworks to address the topic in terms of our own understanding and conceptualization.

We start with a global perspective by examining the dominant status of English and then turn into the use of English and other languages here in Hong Kong. We end our discussion with a comparison between the language policies in Hong Kong and Singapore.
